MOBILE, Ala. - University of South Alabama baseball head coach Steve Kittrell announced the schedule for the Jags' 2009 Red & Blue World Series on Tuesday.
Kittrell also announced that the Jags will begin fall practice Thursday at 2:30 p.m., and will hold scrimmages Friday, Saturday and Sunday at times yet to be determined.
USA's annual intrasquad series begins with game one at 2 p.m. Oct 11. Game two is scheduled for Oct. 13 at 5;30 p.m., and game three is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on Oct. 15.
Game four will be played at 10 a.m. Oct. 17. Kittrell said he chose the early start time in order to give players and fans plenty of time to get over to Ladd-Peebles Stadium for the Jags' 4 p.m. football game against Louisburg (N.C.) Junior College.
If necessary, game five will be played at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, and games six and seven are scheduled for 4 p.m. on Oct. 20 and 22, respectively.
Kittrell enters his 27th season with 990 wins as head coach of the Jags. He became the 50th NCAA coach to notch 1,000 victories in Division I when the Jags' knocked off then-sixth-ranked Ole Miss in last season's opening weekend.
Among 19 returning letterwinners, the Jags welcome back six starting position players and nine pitchers who saw action during the 2009 season.
Adam Heisler, who was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 45th round of the 2009 MLB Draft, chose to return to USA for his senior season. He'll be joined in the outfield by Taylor White, a junior college transfer from Alabama Southern Community College, who earned All-America honors after hitting .476 last season.
Also returning for the Jags are outfielders Clint Reynolds, Sean Laird and Nathaniel Lami, along with infielders Zach Grichor and Jake Overstreet. Seniors Lance Baxter, D.D. Hanks and Chris LaGrow are expected to anchor the Jaguar pitching staff, but they will get plenty of help from a host of newcomers.
