MOBILE, Ala. - Jake Overstreet went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs to lead the Blue team to a 13-6 win in game five of the Red & Blue World Series on Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field. With the win, the Blue team leads the series 3-2.
Garrett Harris and Travis Corley combined to limit the Red team to six runs, despite allowing 15 hits. Harris earned the win after allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in four innings, while Corley notched the save with five innings of relief. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
The Red team got on the board first when Nathanial Lami led off the bottom of the first with a single, stole second base and came home to score on Adam Heisler's RBI single. However, Overstreet doubled leading off the top of the second and came home to score on Stuart Barton's two-out RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
Brittian Schultz drilled a solo homer to right in the bottom of the second to put the Red team back on top, but the Blue team took advantage of an error and plated four runs in the top of the third to jump out to a lead it would never relinquish.
Hunt Griffith led off with a double, then Taylor White reached on a wind-blown fly ball that was dropped in right field. The Red team again benefitted from the wind when Clint Reynolds' hit what looked like a routine flyout to left that ended up being blown almost all the way back to the infield before falling in for a single.
Zach Grichor followed with a RBI single, then Overstreet knocked a two-run triple and came around to score on Sean Laird's sacrifice fly to go in front 5-2.
Harris worked around a one-out double from Dominic Diaz in the bottom of the third, then the Blue team plated another unearned run in the top of the fourth. Harris ran into trouble in the bottom half of the fourth when a walk and a single put two on with one out, but he got Schultz to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Reynolds led off the fifth with a single, stole a base and came around to score all the way from second when Sean Laird drew a walk on a wild pitch. Laird's walk ended Red team starter Jarrett Bailey's day after 4.1 innings. He allowed seven runs - four of which were earned - on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Eric Walters came on in relief with one out and two on and struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning trailing 7-2.
Corley came out of the bullpen to start the fifth and faced the minimum number of batters over the next two innings, then escaped a bases-loaded jam to keep the Red team off the board in the seventh.
Meanwhile, the Blue team offense provided plenty of insurance with four runs in the top of the seventh. Barton brought in Overstreet with a single, then Hook drilled a RBI double and Griffith plated two more runs with a single that put the Blue team on top 11-2. Two more runs scored in the top of the eighth, and the Red team was three outs away from losing the game after eight innings on a 10-run mercy rule, but it took advantage of an error to plate three runs in the bottom of the inning to send the game to the ninth.
Heisler reached on an error, Tyler Vick doubled and Brent Tanner hit a towering three-run homer to right field to cut the deficit to 13-5, but Corley got out of the inning and held the Red team to an unearned run in the ninth to preserve the win.
Game six is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday at Stanky Field. Should game seven be necessary, it would be played at 4 p.m. Thursday.
