JAG SOFTBALL WINS ON FINAL DAY OF LSU TOURNAMENT

Senior pitcher Beth Pilgrim went the distance and Christin Crocker was 4-for-4 at the plate Sunday as the University of South Alabama softball team held on to defeat Campbell 6-5 in the consolation game on the final day of the Purple and Gold Challenge.

Pilgrim got her second win in three days, improving her record to 6-4. She earned the win after pitching a complete game, her third of the tournament, and striking out five CU batters - only one of the runs the right-hander allowed was earned. For her efforts, Pilgrim was picked as a member of the all-tournament team.

Crocker had a season-best four hits while driving in three runs - also a season-high total - and scoring once as well. Brittany Fowler was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while both Courtney Chigaros and Julie Morton each recorded a hit and a run.

"I felt like we scrapped and stayed in a game that we really needed to win," said USA head coach Becky Clark.  "Our hitters did a better job of getting key hits. Overall it was win that we needed to give us confidence going in to our games next week against Auburn and Southeastern Louisiana."

The Jags (9-9) scored early with a run in the first. Fowler began the rally with a leadoff triple, her team-high third of the year. Kelsey Volz then drew a walk, and was followed by Crocker's single to leftfield scoring Fowler.

USA increased its lead by three in the bottom of the second on Crocker's RBI single to center and a Haley Hopkins single through the left side. The Jags scored their next run on an illegal pitch that plated Crocker.

CU (2-12-1) scored its first run of the day in the third when Lauren Stephan reached on an infield single that brought home Sarah Forcgas, then took the lead with four runs in the fifth aided by three Jaguar errors.

The Jags came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on Chigaros' RBI single, then went ahead for good in their next at bat. Fowler singled, moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored the winning run on Crocker's RBI single.

Brittany Stanley took to the loss, allowing two runs in 4.1 innings. Forcgas led the Fighting Camels with two runs and three hits.

The Jags will return to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. when they take on the Auburn at Jaguar Field.
