Doss Named ABCA First-Team All-Region

MOBILE, Ala. ? University of South Alabama senior catcher David Doss has been named to the South Central all-region first team, as announced Friday by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).

As a member of the first team, Doss is eligible to be named to the ABCA All-American teams that will be announced shortly. He was honored as a Louisville Slugger third team All-American on May 28.

“We certainly are excited that he was named to the all-region team, and I’m really optimistic that he’s going to make one of the All-American teams,” head coach Steve Kittrell said. “He’s had a tremendous career at South Alabama, and we’re all very proud of him.”

As a senior, Doss led the team with 12 home runs, 20 doubles and 59 RBI. The four-year letterwinner from Cantonment, Fla. also ranked second on the team with a .378 batting average and a .427 on-base percentage.

In addition to turning in one of the best seasons in South Alabama history, Doss also placed his name at the top of numerous USA career records. He leaves as the Jags’ all-time leader in hits (312), RBI (197), at-bats (851) and doubles (70). Additionally, his .367 batting average is seventh in USA history, and his 195 runs scored are third all-time.

Doss’ selection is the 57th time a Jag has been named to an ABCA all-region team. At least one USA player has been named in four straight and 12 of the last 13 seasons. Ryne Jernigan earned first-team honors in 2008 and went on the be named a third team All-American.

The award comes one day after Doss was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 31st round of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
