GULF SHORES, Ala. - Four University of South Alabama women's golfers shot 78 in Tuesday's final round of the UAB Fall Beach Blast at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club. The Jags combined to shoot 312, enough to move them into a ninth-place finish.
"We're still lacking a few scores each round, and we're not going to be really competitive until we get four or five rounds together," head coach T.J. Jackson said. "Just like every other tournament in the fall, we had lots of good things, but we balanced those out with a few negatives."
Claudia Wolf, Kristen Golightly, Nina Offenberg and Ana Garcia all shot 78 on Tuesday, while Anna Sellen-Runefjell carded a 79. It was the first time all season five USA players have all scored in the 70s.
Wolf (75-78 - 153) had the Jags' best individual finish in a tie for 16th. Golightly notched the best finish of her collegiate career by tying for 31st with a two-round score of 156.
Playing without their leader in stroke average - Fanny Eineren - the Jags improved two strokes from Monday's opening-round 314 that had them alone in 10th place.
"Not having Fanny in the lineup isn't what we want, but it was an unfortunate injury, just one of those freak accidents, and it kind of put a damper on things," Jackson said. "That's when the other girls have to step up and do their jobs. The girls are fighting hard, and we've shown that we have six strong players who can contribute. We've got a lot to look forward to, so we'll continue to work hard in the offseason and we'll be ready to go in the spring."
Alabama-Birmingham's Carolyn Cochran took the individual championship by five strokes with a two-under-par 142. Memphis claimed the team title by 10 strokes with a two-round total of 595.
USA concluded the fall portion of its schedule with the UAB Fall Beach Blast. The Jags return to competition Feb. 14-16 when they travel to Kinder, La. to play in the Koasati Pines Collegiate Classic.
