JAG TRACK AND FIELD TAKES TWO TOP SPOTS AT WAR EAGLE INVITATIONAL

AUBURN, Ala. – The University of South Alabama track and field team came away with two victories from the War Eagle Invitational, which was held Saturday at Auburn’s Hutsell-Rosen Track.

Freshman Vince Frawley and sophomore Damian Lee paced the men’s team, earning the two top spots this weekend.

Frawley (Midlothian, Texas) earned first in the pole vault with a personal-best mark of 5.07m/16-7.5, setting a new school record and qualifying for the USA Track and Field Junior Nationals in the process.

“Vince had a breakthrough performance,” USA head track and field coach Paul Brueske said. “Look for more good things to come from him and the other vaulters.”

Lee (Mobile, Ala.) grabbed his first collegiate victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Murphy High School graduate crossed the finish line first with a time of 9:33.93.

“It was great to see Damian have some success,” Brueske said. “He has been working very hard under [distance] coach [Tim] Goldsack. He is making steady progress and is developing into a solid performer for us.”

Distance runner Saber Salah (Strasborg, France) also had success on the track, earning second place in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:45.10, while sophomores Joey Torres (Navarre, Fla.) and Stephen Nobles (Fairhope, Ala.) led the Jags on the field.

Torres placed second in the discus with a 53.40m/175-2.0 throw, while Nobles landed second in the hammer throw with a 54.21m/177-10.0 toss. The Mobile Christian High School graduate fell short of his school record by just under two feet.

Leading the women was Noelle Jones (Pensacola, Fla.) out of Pine Forest High School. The freshman earned second in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 43.62m/143-1.25. The mark ranks second in USA’s all-time records and qualifies her for the USATF Junior Nationals.

“Noelle has gotten better each week in the javelin,” Brueske said. “For a first year thrower, her performance is remarkable. If she sticks with it she could develop into a pretty solid javelin thrower.”

Sophomore Latifah Johnson (Pensacola, Fla.) grabbed second in the hammer throw with a 54.08m/177-5.0 toss, while freshman Shannon Stever (La Crescent, Minn.) landed third in the pole vault with a 3.50m/11-7.75 mark.

The Jags will resume competition next weekend at the Coach O Invitational in Troy, Ala.
