As the University of South Alabama track and field team return from the last meet of the regular season, sophomore Zac Edward brings home a top-five finish from the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend.
The distance runner led the Jaguars by grabbing fifth place out of 22 competitors in the 5,000 meters. Edwards crossed the line with a time of 14:49.75 for the only top-ten finish of the day for South Alabama, while fellow distance runner and teammate Rich Schmitz turned in a 51st place finish in the 1,500 meters out of 53 runners.
“It was an end to a quality season for both runners,” USA distance coach Tim Goldsack said. “Now, it’s time to start training for cross country.”
Sophomore Glen Odom earned 12th in the javelin with a 59.65m/195-08.00 mark, while teammate Stephen Nobles posted a 15th-place finish in the hammer throw with a 56.36m/184-11.00 mark.
For the women, freshman Noelle Jones tossed in an 11th-place finish in the javelin with a 39.01/128-0 mark.
“A few of our kids were on the bubble to make it to nationals,” USA head track and field coach Paul Brueske said. “The kids we brought did alright, but made no improvements on their previous marks.”
The Jags will resume competition in two weeks at the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Greensboro, Texas.
