MOBILE, Ala. - University of South Alabama golfers Marc-Etienne Bussieres and Claudia Wolf were honored Thursday when they were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV at-large teams announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Bussieres was chosen first-team academic all-district, and is now eligible for the Academic All-America squad that will be announced Tuesday, June 8, while Wolf was a second-team selection. Qualifications for academic all-district honors include maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, status academically and athletically as a sophomore or above, a minimum of at least one academic year completed at the at the institution, and the individuals must be starters or key reserves for their team. District IV is comprised of schools located in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
A senior from Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, Bussieres helped lead the Jaguars to the Sun Belt Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Southeast Regional that began this morning. He earned all-league honors for the second year in a row after tying for third at the Sun Belt Championships, and he ranks second in the conference with a 71.97 scoring average. The 2009-10 USA Male Student-Athlete of the Year, Bussieres was the medalist at Memphis Intercollegiate in the fall with tournament-record 9-under-par 207, while he also set a new mark for 18 holes at the David Toms Intercollegiate the next week when he fired a 7-under-par 64 in the second round. For the year, he has 15 rounds below par including eight in the 60s.
Last season, he earned Academic All-America honors from Golf Coaches Association of America and was a second-team academic all-district pick while earning an individual at-large berth in 2009 NCAA Regional Championships. He has been named to the SBC Commissioner's List each of his first three years at USA.
Wolf, who hails from Igls, Austria, posted three top-10 and seven top-20 finishes as a senior this year while recording a 77.67 stroke average - that figure ranked second on the squad. She finished in the top 20 in six straight events this season, and her best performance was a tie for fourth at the Troy Women's Invitational where she carded a 5-over-par 149. Wolf also tied for eighth at the Lady Jaguar Invitational in the spring after shooting a final-round 72, while she used a 70 - her low round of the campaign - to tie for 16th at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, where she helped the Lady Jags to a fourth-place finish to close out the year.
She was named an All-America Scholar by the coaches association last year, her first with the program, and was also a member of the league's Commissioner's List.
