TWO JAGUAR GOLFERS POST HIGH FINISHES AT STATE AMATEUR EVENTS

MOBILE, Ala. - Paced by McLain Leberte's top-five performance this weekend, the University of South Alabama had two rising sophomore men's golfers fare well at their state amateur tournaments.

Leberte, who hails from Huntsville, finished tied for fourth in a field of 156 individuals at the 94th Alabama State Amateur Championship, which was contested at the Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club in Killen.  He posted a 4-under-par 284 total over four rounds, highlighted by a 69 on the second day of the event - actually, Leberte posted three straight sub-par rounds to close out the tournament.

After opening with a 74 at the 7,133-yard, par-72 course, Leberte carded six birdies in the second round to move to 1-under-par and make the cut by nine strokes.  He started with birdies on two of the first three holes before making the turn 1-under-par, while birdies on both par-five holes on the back nine helped him come in with a 2-under-par 34.

Leberte began the third round with a birdie three on the 409-yard first hole, and he was 2-under par after the turn for the second day in a row to post a 70 and move to 3-under par for the tournament.  After a bogey on No. 10, he carded a four at the par-five 11th en route to closing with three birdies on the final eight holes.  In the final round, he used four birdies - including one on each of the last two holes - to post a 3-under-par 33 over the last nine holes and finish with a 71.

It's the second straight year that Leberte has recorded a top-10 finish at the Alabama State Amateur after he tied for seventh prior to his freshman season at USA.

Blake Kelley recorded a four-day 292 total last weekend to tie for 33rd place at the 91st edition of the Louisiana Golf Association Amateur Championship, which included 144 competitors when play started at the Koasati Pines at Coushatta Golf Club in Kinder.

The Mandeville native was at 147 after the first two days of play at the 7,109-yard, par-71 course, using even-par scores on the back nine each round to make the cut by two shots.  Kelley had a birdie on the 417-yard par-four seventh hole in the third round to post a 1-over-par total over the opening nine holes, then added birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 for a 73.

In the final round, he birdied the same two holes for a 2-under-par 34 on the back nine, as his 72 was his lowest score of the four-day tournament.

Kelley was 5-under par on par-five holes for the event.
