JAGS' BUSSIERES NAMED SECOND-TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA

MOBILE, Ala. - University of South Alabama men's golf Marc-Etienne Bussieres added to his collection of awards off the course Tuesday with the announcement that he has been named to the ESPN The Magazine second-team Academic All-America at-large squad by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Bussieres, a senior from Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, was eligible for the award after earning first-team academic all-district honors in May.  To qualify for academic all-district recognition, individuals must maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, be starters or key reserves for their team, have at least sophomore status both academically and athletically, and they need to have completed at least one academic year at the school.

It's the second straight season that Bussieres has earned Academic All-America distinction after he was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America team a year ago.

In his final season of eligibility, he helped guide the Jaguars to their first Sun Belt Conference championship and berth in an NCAA Regional since 2005.  He ended the year with a 71.83 scoring average, ranking second in the league in the category, to go along with nine top-20 finishes in 12 events (that included six top-10 performances).  Bussieres was an all-Sun Belt selection after tying for third at the league championships the final week of April, marking the second year in a row that he has claimed the honor.

In the fall, he earned medalist honors at the Memphis Intercollegiate after firing a tournament-record 9-under-par 207, and he also set the 18-hole standard with a 7-under-par 64 in the second round at the David Toms Intercollegiate the following week.  Bussieres carded a 7-under-par 209 to tie for second place at the USF Invitational the first weekend of March, while with a birdie on the final hole of his career he tied for 10th at the NCAA Southeast Regional - his 1-under-par 69 in the last round was his ninth score under 70 on the season.

USA's 2009-10 Male Student-Athlete of the Year, Bussieres' scoring average this season ranked fifth on the school's season record list dating back to the 1992-93 campaign, while he leaves with the third-lowest career stroke average (72.78) in that span as well.

It's the second straight year that USA has had an individual earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America accolades after former women's golfer Shirley Harvey was voted second-team at-large last spring.  Seven individuals from the school have been recognized on eight occasions as Academic All-Americans by CoSIDA dating back to 1986.
