BASEBALL ADDS TWO TO 2010 CLASS

University of South Alabama baseball head coach Steve Kittrell added two junior college student-athletes to the 2010-11 roster.

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama baseball head coach Steve Kittrell announced the addition of Trey Sorrells and Whit Dorsey to the 2010-11 roster Saturday. Both have signed grant-in-aid papers and will join the program this fall.

Sorrells, a 5-10, 195-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Merit, Texas, will join the program after two years under head coach Sam Carel at Jefferson College, a Division I member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), which is located in Hillsboro, Mo. Sorrells posted a .347 career batting average at Jefferson with 15 home runs and 73 RBI in his two seasons with the Vikings. As a sophomore he batted .308 with nine home runs, 38 RBI and 31 runs scored . He recorded 10 multi-hit games and drove in multiple runs 11 times, while helping lead Jefferson to 40 wins. As a freshman, Sorrells hit .367 with six home runs and 36 RBI, while posting a .402 OBP and .587 slugging percentage for an OPS of .989.

“He does a good job behind the plate and is solid defensively,” South Alabama associate head coach/head coach in waiting Mark Calvi said. “He does a good job with pitchers, and he handles the bat pretty well. He has occasional power and he provides some leadership behind the plate. He does a very good job of catching and throwing, and he’s an older presence behind the plate and in the lineup.”

Sorrells attended McKinney North High School where he was named 2008 second-team all-state in class 4A by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. As a senior at MNHS, Sorrells batted .449 with s.ix home runs and 49 RBI, and was twice named first-team all-district by The Dallas Morning News.

“Trey (Sorrells) is a guy that has some experience behind the plate and with the bat,” Kittrell said. “He is a scrappy, hard-nosed, South Alabama-type player.”

Dorsey, a 5-11, 185-pound left-handed hitter from Auburn, Ala., joins the program after two seasons under head coach Mike Kandler at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla. He batted .381 with four home runs and 37 RBI as a sophomore last season, and posted a .474 OBP in 36 games. He ranked fourth in his region in RBI per game (1.03) and fifth in batting average, and recorded 11 multiple-hit and 12 multi-RBI games. As a freshman at GCCC, Dorsey hit .342 with eight doubles, 26 RBI and 21 runs scored. He received honorable mention all-state honors as a senior at Auburn High School.

“Whit (Dorsey) brings a good left-handed bat with experience to our lineup,” Kittrell said. “He’s coming from an outstanding program, and brings a lot of experience from a good league. He has a good chance to hit in the meat of our lineup.”

“Whit provides some depth in the lineup. He’s an experienced hitter who has put up good numbers in a tough Panhandle Conference,” Calvi said. “He gives us depth and an older presence in the lineup.”
