JAG BASEBALL FALL UPDATE

Hunt Griffith leads all hitters with six RBI through eight games this fall.

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team, nearly two-and-a-half weeks into fall practice, held four intrasquad games last week at Stanky Field.

The Jaguars continue to work on pitching, hitting and fielding fundamentals during the fall, but are seeing plenty of live action each week. Highlights from each intrasquad game are below.

Fri., Sept. 30Gray 2, Blue 1
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, Neil Hudson delivered a two-run walk-off double to lift the Gray team to a 2-1 win over the Blue team.

Logan Kirkland and Matt Wojciechowski reached on a walk and hit by pitch, respectively, before Hudson doubled with two outs to drive in the game-tying and game-winning runs.

Up to that point, Blue pitchers had held the Gray team hitless. In fact, the only hit recorded by the Gray team was Hudson’s game-winner.

Blue team starter Anthony Izzio pitched two perfect innings, striking out two while facing the minimum. A.J. Braun pitched one scoreless inning for the Blue team.

Andrew Fonzi and Jarrett Bailey, who each tossed two innings for the Gray, combined to allow one unearned run on four hits. Fonzi allowed only two hits and struck out two in his two innings of work, and Bailey allowed one unearned run on two hits with one strikeout.

Jordan Patterson went 1-for-2 with a run scored to lead the Blue team, while Dustin Dalken, Colin Bray and J.T. Files added one hit apiece.

Sat., Oct. 1Blue 14, Gray 3
The Blue team outscored the Gray 10-0 through the first five innings en route to a 14-3 win.

Robby Campbell went 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs scored, and Nolan Earley went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI to pace the Blue offensive attack. Harold Collins added two hits and two runs, and Dorsey had two hits with an RBI and a run scored.

Wojciechowski went 1-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Gray team at the plate.

Patterson and Kyle Bartsch pitched two scoreless innings each, with Bartsch finishing with three strikeouts. Jaime Dennis pitched one scoreless inning with two strikeouts for the Gray squad.

Sun., Oct. 2 Gray 5, Blue 0
The Gray pitching staff of Phillip Byrd, Conner Reese and Dennis combined for five shutout innings and allowed just four hits to take a 5-0 decision.

Byrd allowed only one hit and struck out three in two innings, while Reese allowed just two hits and struck out one in the same span. Dennis allowed just one hit in one inning pitched.

The Gray team, led by Trey Cockrell who went 1-for-2 with an RBI, scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and took a 5-0 lead after two frames.

Cockrell, Hudson and Cole Jarman drove in one run apiece in the first inning, and the Gray tacked on two additional runs in the second on a Blue team error.

Bray went 2-for-2 with a stolen base to lead the Blue squad at the plate, while Campbell and Dalken had one hit each.

Braun tossed two perfect innings with a strikeout in relief for the Blue team.

Tue., Oct. 4 Blue 9, Gray 3
Hunt Griffith went 2-for-2 with a double and four RBI to lead the Blue team to a 9-3 win Tuesday afternoon.

With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the second, Griffith came to the plate with his team having just taken a 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk by Brad Hook. Griffith then delivered a double to extend the Blue lead to 4-0.

The Blue squad extended its lead to 6-0 in the top of the third with two runs, one of which came on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Earley.

But the Gray team answered with three runs in the bottom-half of the third on an RBI triple by Hudson and RBI single from Cockrell. Brent Mitchell delivered a double later in the inning to push across the Gray team’s final run.

The Blue team would add three runs in the top of the fourth, two of which scored on a single by Griffith.

Griffith paced the Blue squad at the plate, while Bray added two hits and a run scored. Cockrell went 2-for-2 with an RBI and one run scored to lead the Gray team.

Gray starter James Traylor pitched one perfect inning with one strikeout. Fonzi and Dennis tossed one shutout inning each for the Blue team.
