TUCSON, Ariz. – Oklahoma State used two six-run innings and pounded out 19 hits to knock off University of South Alabama baseball 13-1 Saturday evening at Kino Sports Complex .
OSU left-hander Andrew Heaney (3-0) pitched a complete game, and allowed just one run on seven hits while striking out five to earn the win.
Jaguar left-hander Brad Hook (0-1) suffered the loss in a career-high 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with one strikeout. USA relievers allowed 10 runs on 11 hits, and issued four walks against just one strikeout.
Oklahoma State (7-3) collected just six hits through the first six innings before opening up a 7-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning with six runs on six hits.
Luis Uribe doubled down the left field line with one out in the top of the seventh, and came around to score on Randy McCurry’s RBI single that just got past a diving Jake Overstreet down the left field line to score Uribe and give the Cowboys a 2-1 lead. The Cowboys loaded the bases later in the inning, and took a 3-1 lead on Dane Phillips’ single to shortstop, then took a 5-1 lead when Zach Johnson hit a ground-rule double to left field. Gabe Weidenaar followed with a two-run single through the right side of the infield to push the OSU lead to 7-1.
OSU sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the eighth inning and scored six runs to push its lead to 13-1. The Cowboys extended their lead to 8-1 on McCurry’s RBI single to score Uribe who singled to lead off the inning. Phillips later delivered a two-run single through the right side of the infield to push the OSU lead to 10-1. The Cowboys added three additional runs on a two-run single by Weidenaar and sacrifice fly off the bat of Uribe.
Six Cowboys recorded multiple hits in the game, led by Phillips who went 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Wiednaar went 3-for-6 with four RBI and a run scored, and Uribe finished 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and three runs scored.
Nolan Earley went 3-for-4 to lead South Alabama at the plate, while Brent Tanner finished 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored.
The Jaguars struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Tilur Smith singled to left field to score Tanner, who led off the inning with a double in the left-center field gap, to give South Alabama a 1-0 lead.
OSU rallied with two outs in the top of the fifth with consecutive singles, then Bailey doubled past a diving Overstreet to push the Cowboys’ first run across and tie the game 1-1.
South Alabama managed to record just five hits after taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
USA (6-4) will return to action at Sunday when it takes on Washington State at 10:30 a.m. (CT) at Kino Sports Complex.
