BORRIES WINS SHOT PUT, MOVES TO THIRD ALL-TIME ON INDOOR PENTATHLON LIST

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Johnnie Borries scored 3,444 points in the indoor pentathlon on three personal-bests and win in the shot put to place fourth overall and eclipse a South Alabama record at the Birmingham Invitational on Wednesday.

Borries topped Latoria English’s old third-place mark from 2005 record by 16 points. The senior graduate of St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile underwent Tommy John surgery following the 2011 indoor season after suffering a labrum injury.

Borries event victory came in the shot put after she posted a toss of 12.21m (40-00.75), which was over two feet further than her closest competitor and good for 675 points.

She clocked her fastest time as a Jaguar in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 9.23 seconds, for a high of 844 points on the day. Her personal-best long jump came via a third-place leap of 5.30m (17-04.75). The final pentathlon task, the 800 meters, saw Borries finish four seconds ahead of her previous best to secure the all-time record after crossing the line in a time of 2:34.36.

Borries was the only participant in the pentathlon to record at least 600 points in all five events.

“This is exactly what we needed from Johnnie,” said head coach Paul Brueske. “She has come right in after an injury that kept her out of last year’s outdoor season and is having success. We’ve worked on her shot put, and if she can duplicate today’s performance later in the season she will have a chance to earn all-Sun Belt Conference honors.”

Leah Hixon and Jasmine Ferguson followed Borries, finishing 11th and 21st, respectively.

The Jaguar three-man heptathlon team of Connor Smith, Ashton Krause and Mikel Magnusson completed four of seven events on Wednesday, with Krause recording the best personal finish thus far on a third-place 1.89m (06-02.25) high-jump mark. Smith took fifth in the high jump and the two tied in the long jump on a 6.10m (20-02.25) measure.

Results from Wednesday’s action can be found here.

Competition will continue Thursday morning with the 5,000 meters. Live stats can be found on the UAB Blazers athletics website and full competition results will be posted on the Jaguar athletics website immediately following the final event.
