MOBILE, Ala. – May 3, 2013, will mark the 50th Anniversary of the University of South Alabama. Throughout the academic year, the USA Department of Athletics will recognize “50 Great Moments In Jaguar Athletics” to honor past teams, coaches and student-athletes for their accomplishments.

František Babej defeats four straight ranked opponents to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA singles championship, going on to end the season No. 17 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings while earning All-American honors from the organization. After leading the Jaguars to the Sun Belt Conference tournament title and a berth in an NCAA Regional, Babej opened the singles championship with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over second-ranked Benedikt Dortsch of Baylor. He followed with straight set wins over individuals from Illinois, Georgia and North Carolina to cap a year he finished with a 30-7 singles mark.

The USA football takes another step in its progression to full-fledged NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision status with its first-ever match-up against another FBS opponent at North Carolina State. Demetre Baker scored the Jaguars’ only touchdown and Jordan Means added a pair of field goals as USA trailed by just 11 points midway through the third quarter before falling 35-13 to the Wolfpack. Offensively, the Jags got 117 yards rushing on 18 carries from Kendall Houston, while Jake Johnson paced the defense with eight total stops including two tackles for loss and Romelle Jones accounted for two of USA”s four sacks of quarterback Mike Glennon.
