INDUSTRY, Calif. – University of South Alabama women’s golf freshman Taylor Appleyard shot an 8-over par 79 to lead the Jaguars in the second round of the Folino Invitational at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms.
Appleyard (87-79) shot a 2-over par 38 on the front nine, and carded a birdie at the par-three 14th to finish 6-over par on the back nine. The Prattville, Ala., native shaved eight shots off of her first-round total, and enters the final round with a two-round total of 166.
Anna Sellén-Runefjell (75-80) finished 9-over par in the second round and enters Tuesday’s final round tied for 16th place. Sellén-Runefjell shot a 3-over par 39 on the front nine, including a birdie at the par-four second hole, and will begin the final round with a two-round total of 155.
Ana Garcia (82-81) shot 5-over par on both the front and back nine for a 10-over par 81. Kristen Golightly (83-82) turned in an 11-over par 82 in the second round, while Ashleigh Ryals (80-85) shot 14-over par on the day for an 85.
South Alabama (320-322) turned in a second-round team score of 322, and will begin the final round in seventh place.
“Yesterday we got off to a poor start and finished with 320, and today we got off to a really good start and finished at 322,” South Alabama head coach TJ Jackson said. “It’s a matter of playing the entire round and keeping it all together. We just had too many big numbers that we can’t have if we want to compete for a championship. That’s the biggest thing, and it’s just a mental thing – it’s nothing physical. It’s a matter of being focused for 18 holes. If you’re not focused on every shot on a tough course like this, it can jump up and bite you.
“But I saw quite a few positives today. We’re hitting enough good shots to post some good scores. The off-center shots just aren’t in play enough to get away with, so a little more consistency tee-to-green is basically it. There’s a fine line between playing really well on this course and shooting the scores we have been shooting. It’s out there; we just have to get it done tomorrow. The girls are giving a really good effort, but I feel like we can improve on keeping our focus for the entire round just a little more.”
Gonzaga (301-303) leads the team standings after two rounds, while Montana’s Tara Green (74-68) holds the individual lead heading into Tuesday’s final round.
The final round of the Folino Invitational will tee off at 8 a.m. (PT). Live scoring for the tournament is available at www.golfstat.com.
