PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Pensacola, Fla.-based Gulf Coast Texans, supported by five current University of South Alabama women’s soccer student-athletes, registered two clean sheets in as many games this weekend at Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex to win the 2012 Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Championship.
 
Jess Oram, Shawn Meach, Clarissa Hernandez, Morgan Motes and Jaguar newcomer Lauren Arnold helped guide the Texans to a perfect 11-win season that culminated with a 3-0 semifinal victory over then-undefeated Salt Lake (Utah) United on Saturday and a 4-0 showing against Aztec MA in the finals on Sunday.
 
The Texans, who claimed the WPSL’s Southeast Conference championship with a 4-3 triumph over the Georgia Revolution last weekend in Pensacola, carried a slender 1-0 lead into halftime on Sunday, then buried three goals in eight minutes midway through the second stanza to widen the scoreline against Aztec, who were competing in their second WPSL final in three years.
 
Less than 24 hours before, the Texans poured in three second-half goals to advance past Salt Lake United, an affiliate of Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake that outscored opponents 42-12 through 11 games this season.
 
The five-woman Jaguar squad will savor a two-day resting period before the entire South Alabama team reports to two-a-day preseason training sessions beginning on Wednesday, ahead of the Lady Jags’ first competition of the season, a 7 p.m. scrimmage against USA alumni on Aug. 11 at The Cage.
 
The WPSL is a 60-plus team national league with five conferences and is the largest women's soccer league in the world. The league is sanctioned by the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) as an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).
