The Jaguar baseball team opens the season by winning 36 of its first 37 games — including 17 in a row to start the year — en route to earning a No. 1 national ranking for the second time in school history. Dave Stapleton led the squad offensively with a .363 batting average and 69 RBI in 66 contests, while on the mound Joe Muich posted a 14-3 mark and Bill Sturgeon paced the Jags with a 1.20 earned-run average. After helping USA to an 8-7 win over Texas-Pan American on the opening day of the NCAA South Regional, the program’s school-record 52nd win, Stapleton, Mike O’Berry and Pat Putman would all go on to advance to the Major Leagues.
