After 28 years at South Alabama, long-time Director of Athletics Joe Gottfried announces his retirement at a press conference at the Mitchell Center. During his tenure, Jaguar Athletics captured the Vic Bubas Cup — presented to the top overall athletic program in the Sun Belt Conference — a record 10 times in a 13-year span, while USA programs claimed 104 league titles and appeared in NCAA Championship events on 54 occasions under his direction. Individually, 75 Jaguar and Lady Jag student-athletes earned All-America recognition during his tenure while competing in NCAA Championship 123 times, and the program had individuals recognized as the SBC Coach of the Year on 62 occasions as well. Gottfried also helped shape USA Athletics with his hand in the start of the football program while also adding women’s soccer and softball to the department lineup.
