Lance Johnson leads the NCAA and sets a school record — one that still stands today — with 89 stolen bases in 69 games. A junior that spring, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native batted .343 and scored 83 runs as well, earning third-team All-America honors from American Association of Collegiate Baseball Coaches and Baseball America while being named first-team all-region and all-Sun Belt Conference. Johnson helped the Jaguars end the year 50-19 after winning the league tournament title and advancing to the finals of the NCAA South I Regional in Tallahassee, Fla. He was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the sixth round of the draft that year and would go on to play 14 years in the Major Leagues.

The USA women’s golf team earns its first-ever Sun Belt Conference championship after making up seven shots on the final day to defeat Arkansas-Little Rock by one stroke at The Club at Cimarron in Mission, Texas. Jennifer Krupa — who paced the league in scoring average at the end of the season — and Tiffany Hess both earned all-conference honors, while Rhonda Singleton tied for seventh place individually at the tournament and Kris Doggett was selected the Sun Belt Coach of the Year. Krupa would go on to become just the second person in program history to qualify for national postseason play after earning an invitation to the NCAA East Regional, where she tied for 22nd place.
