MOBILE, Ala. – May 3, 2013, will mark the 50th Anniversary of the University of South Alabama. Throughout the academic year, the USA Department of Athletics will recognize “50 Great Moments In Jaguar Athletics” to honor past teams, coaches and student-athletes for their accomplishments.
1988
Luis Gonzalez drives in a school season-record 80 runs, ending the year with a .375 batting average, 19 doubles, 16 homes runs and 61 runs scored in helping the Jaguars to a 41-22 finish. The school’s first Freshman All-American in 1986, Gonzalez ended his career among South Alabama’s all-time leaders with 51 doubles, 32 homers and 183 RBI before going on to a 19-year career in the Major Leagues. As a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks he led the National League with 206 hits in 1999, while two years later his walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning off eventual all-time saves leader Mariano Rivera delivered the first World Series title in franchise history.
