MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama women's basketball head coach Terry Fowler announced Monday the addition of Donyeah (pronounced Don-yay) Mayfield, a transfer from Tennessee State University, to the Jaguar program.
Mayfield is the fourth newcomer and third transfer added to the roster this offseason, joining fellow transfers Julliann Miller (Evansville) and Grace Farnsworth (Weber State) and true freshman Colby Davis. Due to NCAA transfer rules, she will have to sit out the 2013-14 season, but she will be able to practice with the club and have two years of eligibility remaining.
Fowler believes with the addition of Mayfield, the Jaguars are further adding versatility to their roster.
"Donyeah brings a lot of versatility to us," Fowler said of the new addition. "She's a wing player who can play the four spot as well. We're excited what she's going to bring to our program, especially this year in practice as she helps our team out and feels her way into our system."
Mayfield also has family ties to the South Alabama family as she is related to both a current and former Jaguar.
"She's cousins with the Ammons – Mychal (current men's basketball player) and Taylor (former women's basketball) – and you know their athletic ability. She's a hard worker and an unbelievable athlete."
The 5-10 guard/forward lettered the past two seasons at Tennessee State located in Nashville, Tenn., where she competed in 38 games for the Tigers, starting seven of those contests. Last season, Mayfield saw limited time on the floor playing under a new head coach. She played in nine games recording two points, an assists, a steal and two blocks in 34 minutes of action. Â
During the 2011-12 season, Mayfield competed in 29 of TSU's games, starting seven. She averaged 3.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per outing in 11.9 minutes of action, while knocking down 40.9 percent of her shot attempts. The Vicksburg, Miss., native was 45-of-11 from the field and posted double figures in scoring twice with 10 points versus Lipscomb and Eastern Illinois. Mayfield also pulled down a season-best nine rebounds on two occasions – versus Jackson State and Florida A&M. Of her 114 total rebounds during the season, 48 were on the offensive glass, while 66 were at the defensive end. She tied for second on the team with 12 blocks and also recorded 11 steals and nine assists for the Tigers.
Prior to beginning her collegiate career at Tennessee State, Mayfield was a standout at Vicksburg High School in Vicksburg, Miss. As a senior, Mayfield averaged a double-double with 18.4 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. She tallied 347 total points and grabbed 265 rebounds during that same season. Mayfield also averaged 2.5 blocks and 1.7 steals. Her best outing that season during her senior campaign came against Natchez High School where she posted 29 points and 22 rebounds.
Mayfield was a McDonald's All-American nominee prior to her final prep season and was selected to participate in the Alabama/Mississippi All-Star Game.  She was also ranked among MaxPrep.com's top 100 players in Mississippi.
