MOBILE, Ala. – No. 20 University of South Alabama softball used 12 strikeouts from All-American pitcher Hannah Campbell, and sophomore Emily Messer recorded a hit and RBI to lead the Jaguars to a 2-1 victory over Syracuse at the Mardi Gras Invitational on Friday.
After four-and-a-half scoreless innings, Messer scratched USA's first run across when she drew a walk, advanced on Amanda Herron's sacrifice bunt and rounded home when Gwen Jones reached on an Orange throwing error.
In the bottom of the sixth, USA's Kaitlyn Griffith doubled the Jaguar advantage when she walked, advanced to second on a Chloe Rathburn sacrifice fly and scored on Messer's infield single.
Syracuse's Nicole Lundstrom homered in the top of the seventh to cut USA's lead in half, and Ellie Forkin singled to put the go-ahead run on base, but Campbell forced a groundout to end the game.
Campbell's 12 strikeouts fall two short of her career-best 14, recorded in 2012. The Jaguars take on Syracuse again on Saturday at 6 p.m.
