MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will put its five-game winning streak on the line when it hosts Southern Mississippi at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Stanky Field.
South Alabama (9-3) earned a midweek win at Alabama State last Tuesday before returning to Mobile and completing a four-game sweep of Brown over the weekend at Stanky Field.
USA will send right-hander Austin Bembnowski (1-0) to the mound for his second start of the season. USM will counter with left-hander Kirk McCarty (0-0) who will also make his second start of the year.
South Alabama leads the Sun Belt Conference in batting average (.311), on-base percentage (.430), runs scored (91), hits (126), RBI (76), walks (67), hit by pitch (26) and sacrifice flies (11) entering the contest. The Jags have stolen 18 bases in their first 12 games, which is one shy of matching their entire 2014 stolen-base total of 19 in 55 games.
Adam Ballew and Cole Billingsley each carries a team-best five-game hitting streak into the game. Drew LaBounty and Cameron Cummings have hit safely in four straight games, while LaBounty has reached base in a team-best 11 consecutive contests.
The USA bullpen has gone 7-0 with three saves, and combined for one shutout through the first 12 games of the season. Jaguar relievers have struck out 48 batters against 21 walks in 67 innings pitched, and posted a 2.82 ERA while limiting the opposition to a .239 batting average.
Southern Miss (5-4-1) enters the game having won back-to-back games at Troy over the weekend, including a 5-0 shutout victory Sunday afternoon. USM enters the game hitting .260 as a team, while the Golden Eagle pitching staff carries a 2.41 team ERA with 79 strikeouts against 30 walks in 86 innings pitched.
USA holds a 58-30 all-time lead over Southern Miss in a series that dates back to 1967. The schools split a pair of games last season with USA defeating USM 5-1 in Hattiesburg, before the Golden Eagles won 3-1 at Stanky Field on April 2 to snap a five-game Jaguar win streak in the series.
