NEW ORLEANS, La. – After claiming a pair of wins in relief in No. 22 University of South Alabama softball's Sun Belt Conference series sweep of Texas-Arlington last weekend, the league announced on Monday that freshman right-hander Kalen McGill has earned Pitcher-of-the-Week honors.
McGill picked up the wins in games two and three, striking out eight and scattering as many Maverick hits, while dealing no walks and allowing no runs. The game-three victory marked the fifth straight for McGill.
"Kalen has been huge for us these past two series, so I am excited that she is being recognized for her efforts," said USA head coach Becky Clark. "She is such a competitor and wants the ball in tough situations. She has done a great job of attacking the zone, and our defense has done a great job of making the plays behind her."
McGill (12-1) is currently tied for second in the conference with 12 wins and is fourth in ERA (2.18). The Gainesville, Fla., native is also tied for third in fewest walks allowed (14) and fifth in earned runs allowed (24) in the SBC.
She's also 28
th in the NCAA in fewest walks allowed per seven innings (1.27).
McGill is the fourth USA honoree for weekly conference awards. Classmate Devin Brown earned Pitcher-of-the-Week honors on Feb. 9 and March 2. Senior shortstop Kaitlyn Griffith earned Player-of-the-Week designation on Feb. 23. Senior right-hander Farish Beard was named Pitcher of the Week on March 23.
