MOBILE, Ala. – Competing on the course he will soon call home, University of South Alabama men's golf signee Brooks Rabren claimed medalist honors at the Alabama High School Athletic Association state 4A tournament on Tuesday.
Rabren, who is from Dozier, represented Straughn High as an individual at the event — held at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course — and posted a state-record 66 in Monday's opening round before following up with a 67 on Tuesday. His 9-under-par 133 total tied for the low mark in all tournament classifications, and he did not have a bogey over 36 holes of play.
In the final round, Rabren had birdies on the first, third and fourth holes — all par fours — then closed out the championship by sinking a 70-foot putt for a four on No. 18. His lone birdie on the front nine of the course on the first day came at the 522-yard fifth, but after the turn he carded fours on Nos. 10 and 18 while also birdying the 12th and 14th holes.
He finished seven strokes ahead of the runner-up after qualifying for the state championship with a 66 to earn the victory at the sub-state last week.
It's the second time in three years Rabren has collected medalist honors at the state championship, having won the state 3A tournament as a sophomore.
