SOUTH ALABAMA STUDENT-ATHLETES BREAK DEPARTMENT RECORD FOR SBC ACADEMIC HONORS

2014-15 Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List and Academic Honor Roll (.pdf)

NEW ORLEANS – A record-breaking total of 162 University of South Alabama student-athletes received Sun Belt Conference academic recognition, released by the league office Wednesday, for accomplishments made during the 2014-15 academic year.

The 162 student-athletes were a part of the 2014-15 SBC Commissioner's List and Academic Honor Roll, ranking South Alabama sixth in the conference.  This year's total is an increase of seven from the previous year's record of 155 student-athletes.

USA tied for second in the SBC with 88 individuals on the Commissioner's List, which highlights those with a grade-point average of 3.5 or better during the previous two semesters. Another 74 Jags were recognized in the Academic Honor Roll, which included student-athletes with a 3.0-3.49 GPA during that time frame.

Three teams – football (28), women's cross country/track and field (25) and men's cross country/track and field (21) – featured more than 20 student-athletes on the lists.  Baseball followed with 15 recognized, while soccer added 13 from its squad and softball placed 12 members.

Volleyball contributed a total of nine student-athletes to the academic award lists, while women's tennis and men's golf were one behind.  Six members from both the men's and women's basketball teams were recognized, along with four from men's tennis.

Beating their program-best of 15 from last year, the women's cross country/track and field team had 18 of its members make the Commissioner's List, while the program also placed 14 members on the men's side.  The football team also reached double digits with 20 student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll.

The academic success caps off a solid all-around year for the Jaguar athletic department both in the classroom and on the field.  The Jaguars were presented the Vic Bubas Cup in May for being the SBC's top member in competition, including four programs – soccer, men's cross country, baseball and women's tennis – that won league championships.
