UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 3/23

Date: 3/23
Time: 7:10-9:10 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Milton Revell, Jr., RB, Jacksonville, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Revell: "Milton has had a solid spring.  He has come out and made a lot of plays, he climbs up the depth chart daily.  He has really given us some depth at the running back position."

Defensive Player of the Day: Jeremy Reaves, So., CB, Pensacola, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Reaves: "We put in a lot of our sub packages today, and Jeremy is a different position in almost all of them just because he is so versatile and so valuable.  For him to take on that load on top of his other responsibilities at corner, he really did a heck of a job today."

Play of the Day: With the offense facing third-and-one on the defense's 18-yard line, Darrell Songy forced a fumble that Reaves was able to recover before the ball rolled into the end zone.  During seven-on-seven skeleton passing drills, it appeared that Cole Garvin connected with Tyrone Williams for a long gain down the right sideline but Jalen Thompson managed to break up the pass before falling to the ground, nearly recording an interception in the process.

Team period highlights: There were four different team periods on the day, each lasting between six and 10 minutes.  The Jags' focus included running plays from midfield and a pair of possessions in the red zone followed by segments of practice that featured third-and-short as well as third-and-long situations.

Miscellaneous Notes
-In the red zone, Dami Ayoola provided a first down with an eight-yard gain leading to a four-yard scoring pass from Dallas Davis to Gerald Everett two plays later; Aleem Sunanon capped the second drive starting at the defense's 20-yard line with a 36-yard field goal.
-The offense was 4-of-10 on third-and-short conversions in the next team period, but the defense closed out practice by allowing the chains to move just twice on 10 third-and-long situations.
-Songy posted a pair of sacks in the last period of the morning, with Bull Barge adding a sack in the same period as well as forcing a fumble that Dewayne Alford recovered for the defense during the first team drills of the day.
-Barge and Tavon Cox also intercepted passes during seven-on-seven drills.
-The lone special teams period of the day — which opened the practice — focused on covering kickoffs.

Head coach Joey Jones
-On Wednesday's practice: "We worked on third-and-long and had a third-and-short period; I thought in the third-and-short period offensively we did really well, but in the third-and-long period the defense just dominated.  It was live, guys were having fun and getting after it.  It was fun to watch, they had great energy about them."
-On what he wants to see in Saturday's second scrimmage: "I want to see the team come together a little more.  We've focused in the spring on getting better individually, so I would like to see the offense and defense come together and be more cohesive.  Offensively we just need to execute — we don't have a lot of the offense in but need to execute what we have — and defensively I want to see us tackle well and fly to the football.  If I see those two things I will be happy."
-On the team's quarterback battle: "It's still a little too early, we are trying to get three guys reps right now."

Up next: USA's next practice will take place at 7:10 a.m. on Friday at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
