Date: 3/25
Time: 7:10-9:10 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)
Offensive Player of the Day: Josh Magee, Jr., WR, Hoover, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Magee: "We really expect a lot of big things out of Josh this coming year. He had a very solid practice — we are doing a lot of different things with him — and made some plays. We all know what he is capable of, we're excited to have him coming back this year."
Defensive Player of the Day: Roman Buchanan, Jr., LB, Enterprise, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Buchanan: "Roman just keeps getting better making that transition to linebacker. I am surprised at how natural some of his linebacker instincts are, but now you see him starting to get comfortable to the point to where he is making a lot of plays out there. He had a great interception today, he keeps just making plays."
Play of the Day: Buchanan's interception, which came during 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills, came on a ball that was first deflected by Jeremy Reaves before hitting Bull Barge. Later in the same period, on a play from the defense's 10-yard line, Gerald Everett caught a pass in the back of the end zone from Dallas Davis, getting both feet inbounds before being shoved over the end line by a defensive back.
Team period highlights: The first team period of the morning — lasting 15 minutes — saw the offense running plays on first-and-10, with the second that followed featuring the Jaguars working on the two-minute drill.
Miscellaneous Notes-During the first two-minute drill the USA defense did not allow a first down, but the second-team offense used two Evan Orth completions and a nine-yard run from Dami Ayoola to set up Aleem Sunanon's 37-yard field goal.
-Orth completed all but one pass attempt on the day; the rising sophomore went 6-of-6 during skeleton passing drills with a touchdown, hit 6-of-7 passes during the team period and was 2-of-2 during the two-minute drill.
-Dallas Davis connected on 5-of-6 pass attempts during the team period after going 6-of-7 with the scoring throw to Everett in the 7-on-7 period.
-Everett caught six balls total, four in the skeleton passing portion of practice and two in the first team period.
-Quinton Lane had the Jaguars' other touchdown catch on a 10-yard throw from Orth — like Everett, he managed to come down before going out of bounds at the back of the end zone.
-On the initial snap of the opening team period Barge made a diving play to break up a pass in the flat.
Head coach Joey Jones-On improvement offensively at Friday's practice: "The offensive line really came off the ball, they are getting better — [assistant] coach [Richard] Owens is doing a heck of a job with them. It all starts there, when they execute well there are holes to run through and time to throw."
-On if the offense has caught up to the defense this spring: "I think the offense is getting better. The good thing is that we have great competition that is going to make both sides better, that's really what I'm interested in. It's not about who wins but that everybody is getting better."
-On what he has liked the most that he has seen to this point of the spring season: "What I like the most about this team is that the guys are together; they are pulling for each other, there is no selfishness out there. They have one heartbeat as a team."
-On what he is looking for out of the second scrimmage of the spring: "I want to see us execute a little better. Offensively we have done some good things but we have had a lot of turnovers. Defensively I want to watch us tackle and fly to the football."
Up next: The Jaguars' second full scrimmage of the spring season — set to take place at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility — will start at 10:30 a.m.
