Date: 3/28
Time: 7:10-9:10 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads
Offensive Player of the Day: Milton Revell, Jr., RB, Jacksonville, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Milton Revell: "Milton comes out every single day with a great attitude and work ethic, he has had a solid spring. Today he made some big plays for us in tough situations. I'm really proud to see how he has progressed this spring."
Defensive Player of the Day: Tre Alford, So., DL, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Alford: "Tre continues to impress and is taking his game to another level, which is what we've asked great players like him to do. It's very easy to say 'I've arrived,' but I don't think he is doing that; I think he is challenging himself each and every day, and now you are starting to see the fruit of that improvement."
Play of the Day: With the defense facing third-and-four at the offense's 46-yard line, Tavon Cox not only found his way into the backfield to make a stop but forced a fumble that was recovered by Collier Smith.
Team period highlights: The week started with a pair of team periods to close out practice — the first highlighted red zone plays, the second featured third-down conversions.
Miscellaneous Notes-The Jag offense scored on each of its first four possessions in the red zone, with two of those 20-yard touchdown passes from Dallas Davis to Kevin Kutchera and Cole Garvin to Revell.
-The defense didn't allow any points on the final two drives starting at its own 20-yard line, with Randy Allen recording a sack to set back the offense on the first and Diantae Thomas stopping the second with a tackle five yards in the backfield.
-Davis kept the ball for one conversion and Xavier Johnson followed by reaching the first-down marker with the offense facing third-and-three, but the defense got two stops to win each of the final three third-down situations.
-The defense stopped each of the last three plays with Jalen Thompson breaking up one pass followed by two Chason Milner deflections; Thompson was also credited with a pass defensed in the red zone along with Nigel Lawrence, Jeremy Reaves and Darian Mills.
-Aleem Sunanon and Gavin Patterson both connected on a field goal in the red zone, with the former hitting from 32 yards out and the latter making a 36-yard try.
-South Alabama will play host to its annual Pro Day function on campus beginning at noon; 22 individuals will take part, with the group including 13 seniors from the program's 2015 squad and four other former players whose eligibility expired the previous fall.
Head coach Joey Jones-On what he saw at Monday's practice: "There was really good energy, the guys came out ready to go. The defense is starting to get a full understanding of the concepts we have put in so we've made a lot of progress there. I thought we were better offensively down in the red zone, they did a good job sticking the ball in the end zone a few times."
-On the third-down period: "The defense won third-down situations for the most part, which is good. They did a great job of executing what they were doing."
-On expectations for Wednesday's practice: "Right now we will look to work all the different situations — third down again, the red zone again because it's the last day in full pads. We won't be tackling, but it will be a 'thud' practice. We feel like we've got most of the heavy work in that we needed to address in the spring with the exception of the game on Saturday."
Up next: The Jags' final spring practice in full pads is slated to begin Wednesday at 7:10 a.m. on campus
