Date: 3/30
Time: 7:10-9:10 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads
Offensive Player of the Day: none
Defensive Player of the Day: Devon Earl, Jr., S, Hoover, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Earl: "Devon's experience continues to show up. He is executing very well, and when a guy with his experience communicates to the rest of the field there is a sense of confidence that everyone else has around him. I think he pushes our players forward; if something goes wrong, go to the next play, he makes those communications to get everybody back on the same page."
Play of the Day: Facing fourth-and-five from midfield in the two-minute drill, Gerald Everett made a diving catch for a 10-yard gain while getting out of bounds to stop the clock. Defensively, Earl ended the offense's march when he broke up a pass in the back of the end zone as time expired.
Team period highlights: The first of three team periods — lasting 10 minutes — featured work in the red zone. It was followed by periods covering third-downs plays and the two-minute drill, which were six and 10 minutes in length, respectively.
Miscellaneous Notes-This was the Jaguars' last practice in full pads of the spring season.
-The iHeartRadio Red-Blue Game will kick off Saturday at noon at Ladd-Peebles Stadium; admission is free, as is parking up until the start of the contest.
-In the red zone, the first-team defense did not allow a first down on the opening two possessions, although the offense rebounded with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Dallas Davis to Kevin Kutchera on its final drive. The second-team unit also had one touchdown, with Milton Revell scoring from six yards out one play after Evan Orth connected with James Bynes for a 14-yard gain.
-The Jaguar defense got a stop on four of six third-down plays.
-The second-team offense's two-minute drill ended with a 25-yard touchdown catch by Quinton Lane on a throw from Cole Garvin, wrapping up a three-play, 55-yard march.
-During 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills, the Jag defense broke up seven passes — including two by Kalen Jackson — to go along with a Jalen Thompson interception.
-Randy Allen, Sean Grayer and Darrell Songy all had sacks for the first-team defense during red zone drills.
-Work on kickoff coverage highlighted the special teams period at the start of the day.
Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent-On how the offense has performed this spring: "I think we have made a lot of progress. We've changed some things and have some new personnel in, but overall the kids have come out here every day and worked extremely hard. [Assistant] Coach [Kane] Wommack and his staff are doing a great job putting a lot of pressure on us and creating a lot of problems for us, and we started to get better and better; I think that showed in the scrimmage on Saturday."
-On USA's quarterbacks: "I think all three of them have improved. Dallas has had a really good spring, Cole has had a really good spring. Cole was on the scout team all fall, so he didn't get any reps in this offense; each day he gets better and more comfortable. And Evan has been solid too, I think we have three solid young quarterbacks who can operate what we are doing offensively."
-On what the offense has accomplished during the spring season: "I think we got in 70 percent of what we wanted to get in; that's OK because we don't just want to put it in just to put it in, we want to get good at our base [packages] before we move forward. We will be able to clean up the other stuff later, but so far I have been extremely pleased."
Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack-On how the defense has played throughout the spring season: "So far I've been really pleased. I was really excited when I took this job, and after I see the players that we have here and the effort that they are giving, and the energy that [Head] Coach [Joey] Jones and the rest of the guys are creating I am really excited."
-On how important energy is for his defense: "That's probably one of my main jobs as a coordinator. We have a good scheme that we can execute, so I need to create an atmosphere and an energy within our players to get them to buy into each other and the coaches. When players see that our coaches are passionate about what they do, I think that is infectious. I feel we're starting to see that from our guys."
-On what he is looking for defensively in the Red-Blue Game Saturday: "We're breaking everybody up, so sometimes it's hard for me to see things holistically. What I look for is individual execution. I have a number in my head of a certain amount of guys I know at this point that I can go into the season and play with; right now that number is probably in the 17-18 range, what I am looking for is those four to six other guys who I know we are going to have to count on when the season comes."
Up next: The Jaguars will work out in helmets on campus beginning at 7:10 a.m. Friday, the team's final practice prior to the iHeartRadio Red-Blue Game on Saturday
