UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 3/7

Date: 3/7
Time: 7:10-9:10 a.m. (CST)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Quinton Lane, Jr., WR, Ackerman, Miss.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Lane: "Quinton is a really, really gifted athlete, he is extremely fast and explosive.  He is starting to figure it out at the receiver position, he is understanding the offense better on a daily basis and making more plays each day.  The light is starting to come on, he is a guy who has a chance to make a lot of big plays for us."

Defensive Player of the Day: Bull Barge, Fr., LB, Moultrie, Ga.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Barge: "Bull did a really good job today, he is one of the most consistent guys we have in our linebacking corps.  Darrell Songy had to sit out a little bit at the end of practice so he had to push through with those reps; he grinded through our fifth practice on a day that can be long and tiring.  Bull did a really nice job the way he pushed through at the end."

Play of the Day: On the next-to-last play of the morning, Jeremy Reaves made a diving break up of a Cole Garvin pass to prevent a completion and a conversion for the offense on third down.

Team period highlights: There were four periods devoted to team activities in the first practice of the week.  The first two, which lasted 10 minutes each, focused on the run game, followed by a nearly 15-minute segment during which the offense ran all plays against the defense.  The last team period saw the offense attempting to convert on third downs.

Miscellaneous Notes
-Only two receivers had more than one catch in the final three team periods; Gerald Everett finished with six receptions while James Bynes recorded five.
-Five individuals were credited with sacks including Bull Barge, Zach Befort, Roman Buchanan and Sean Grayer.
-Devon Earl and T'Qwan Robinson intercepted passes, and in addition to Reaves a trio of Jag defenders — Tre Alford, Kalen Jackson and Jalen Thompson — were credited with passes broken up.
-Dallas Davis completed 10-of-15 pass attempts during the final three team periods while Garvin was 7-of-12 passing.
-During the first half of practice the defense used a nearly 15-minute period to go through a takeaway circuit, with the offense using a segment of drills to work on ball security.
-The Jaguars' two special teams periods concentrated on kickoff coverage drills.

Head coach Joey Jones
-On where the team stands one-third of the way through spring practice: "We've got to get some work done this week, we have one more day of true practice before the scrimmage on Friday.  We have to do all we can do to become better.  We're a little sloppy at times — which is to be expected — but I think they know what to do, sometimes physically we are not getting it done.  We need to give them more reps to get there, but I love the attitude and the fight in them."
-On goals for Friday's first scrimmage: "We are in a mode where we are trying to evaluate individuals.  I know the team, on offense and defense, is not going to look as good as it will look in the fall, so I'm not as concerned with that as I am trying to get individuals out there we know.  By the end of the spring we want to have a two-deep — maybe even three-deep in some cases — of who we feel we can count on, we're trying to find those individuals who can help us win."

Up next: USA's last workout prior to the first spring scrimmage will begin on Wednesday at 7:10 a.m. on campus
