Game StatsPhoto GalleryMOBILE, Ala. – Dallas Davis threw for two scores and Gerald Everett recorded a team-best four receptions to help lift the Red to a 35-21 victory over the Blue Saturday in the University of South Alabama football program's iHeartRadio Red-Blue Spring Game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Davis was 7-of-9 passing on the day, recording 111 yards, and he guided the Red offense to scores on each of its first two possessions in a wire-to-wire win. He opened the day with a 60-yard pass to Xavier Johnson out of the backfield, connecting with Everett — who would finish with 53 yards — for a five yard-touchdown pass three plays later. And with his team ahead by seven points, he put the game out of reach when he found Deshawn Applewhite for a 15-yard score on the third snap of the final quarter.
Johnson finished with 84 all-purpose yards in limited action, with the Red squad getting 51 yards on nine carries from Berron Tyson and 37 more and a score from Milton Revell. Cameron Broadnax posted a team-best 68 yards on three receptions as the Red had a 332-295 advantage in total offense.
Deonta Moore posted a game-best 91 yards on 14 carries for the Blue team, with Carlos Robinson II supplying 69 more on 10 rushes. Evan Orth completed 7-of-10 attempts for the team — he was also 2-of-4 passing for the Red — for 121 yards, with James Bynes catching four balls for a game-high 79 yards and Parker Mason adding 53 on four receptions.
JarMarkus Sims and Michael Smith paced the Red with seven stops apiece, with the former forcing two fumbles to go along with 1½ tackles for loss. Sean Grayer also had 1½ stops behind the line for the unit. Darrell Songy and Chris Wilkerson collected six tackles each to lead the Blue, with Nigel Lawrence adding five stops, and Zach Befort and Tavon Cox four apiece.
After the Red went ahead 7-0, the Blue was facing fourth-and-five-at its own 44-yard line. Jeremy Reaves and Roman Buchanan combined to stop Josh Magee for a three-yard loss, and instead Davis march the Red 41 yards in 10 plays before Revell scored from four yards out to double the advantage. Quinton Lane had an 11-yard run on the drive, which Davis kept alive by converting on fourth-and-one inside the Blue five-yard line.
Rashaan Watson intercepted a pass for the Blue on the opening snap of the second period, but on the very next play Sims sacked Cole Garvin with Jeffery Whatley picking up the loose ball and running it in from 18 yards out to push the Red lead to 21-0.
Orth found Mason for a 36-yard gain down the left sideline, setting up Tony Ray Parnell's 14-yard touchdown run that got Blue on the scoreboard with its opening march of the second half. On the team's next possession, Orth drew the Blue within seven points with a 55-yard touchdown pass to James Bynes, and they would again make it a one-score game with just under six minutes to go in regulation when Moore scored from one yard out.
The Red would hold on to the ball the rest of the way, however, and after back-to-back passes from Garvin to Broadnax for gains of 13 and 31 yards, Martavious Stewart scored on a two-yard touchdown run on the final play of the contest.
"The first thing I see is a team that is all going in the same direction, they care about what is going on around here," said Jaguar head coach Joey Jones afterward. "I think there was much improvement from the first day of the spring until now, but this was a day for the players and a day for the fans."
Jones also announced the program's annual spring season award winners following the contest. The most improved at each position included Dewayne Alford (defensive end), Cox (linebacker), Quinton Dent (cornerback), Grayer (defensive tackle), Kevin Kutchera (wide receiver), Lawrence (safety), Easton Marshall (tight end), Orth (quarterback), Robinson II (running back), Nelson Santiago (offensive line). Bull Barge (defense), Noah Fisher (offense) and Songy (special teams) were presented "I Like To Practice" awards, with Alford the defensive honoree and Garvin chosen on offense as the most improved in the strength and conditioning program.
The Jaguars will open the 2016 campaign on Sept. 3 with a trip to Mississippi State, with their home opener the following week against Georgia Southern.
