Head coach Joey Jones
On his overall observations on the scrimmage: "There were some good things out there, but I don't know if we're playing as intense as we have to play on Saturday; it was a good day, just not great. I thought our quarterbacks played pretty good although we took too many sacks, but overall they handled the ball well and threw it really well. Defensively Roman Buchanan was running through the line making plays, and Tyree Turner played extremely well on the defensive line. We just have to execute a little better, we have to be better than this to play against SEC teams and teams in the Sun Belt [Conference]."
On his immediate evaluation of the day: "I think offensively we are executing pretty well, the worst thing was that the pass rushers were getting to the quarterback. We have some good guys rushing off the edge, but we have to protect the quarterback better in those situations — you can't have 10-yard sacks and expect to sustain drives."
On the team's quarterback situation after the scrimmage: "I think Cole is a guy we can win with and I thought Evan played really well as well. It's going to be interesting, we have three guys [competing] and here in two weeks I'm going to make a decision and it's going to be one guy; they better be fighting for it."
On new wide receivers in the program: "Jordan McCray has been a real pleasant surprise, we have a chance with him; he is going to be a really good football player. Sa'Mory Collier has speed, we've been saying the last couple of weeks we have to get him in the game and I think he proved that today."
Roman Buchanan
On how the scrimmage went from his perspective: "I think it went pretty well. We could've had a little more energy. With it being the first scrimmage, I think everyone might've been a bit winded because of game situations, but for the most part, I thought I thought it was pretty positive."
On how he sees the defense coming together: "I do feel like it's coming along a little bit better. We are a lot more energetic and creating more negative plays [for the offense]. We feed off those negative plays."
Dallas Davis
On how the scrimmage went for him and the offense: "I feel like we could have done better. We had way too many busts that we need to go back and clean up this week, and we need to get back after it."
On the quarterback competition: "I feel like it's going good. I was out [of practice] for a couple of days. I need to fix my shoulder and get back out there so I can compete."
Devon Earl
On the lack of turnovers today: "Our offense had an emphasis on not turning the ball over today, but we as a defense definitely want to create more turnovers."
On how the scrimmage went: "I feel it went really well. Our defensive line looked incredible and the pass rush looked amazing. It makes our job on the back end [of the defense] a lot easier."
On the play of new receivers Jordan McCray and Sa'Mory Collier: "Jordan is going to be really good. He's young, but the way he can pin-point a ball and the ball skills that he already has are amazing. Sa'Mory is a burner, he's coming off the slot and is someone I have to cover. His speed is second-to-none."
Cole Garvin
On if he feels today worked in his favor in the quarterback competition: "We all did some good things, but we also did some little things wrong that we need to clean up. I've had one or two of those types of plays every day in practice, and I had a couple out here today. I just have to clean those up and keep progressing."
On how he felt the offense did in today in the scrimmage: "For the first scrimmage, I felt we did well. Everyone had something that they need to clean up and if we do that, we will be fine by the start of the season."
Up next: After consecutive days off, the Jaguars will practice on campus Tuesday — the first day of fall semester classes — beginning at 3:30 p.m.
