UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/16

Date: 8/16
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Dami Ayoola, Sr., RB, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Ayoola: "Dami is just the same guy every day.  He comes [to practice] with a tremendous attitude and a tremendous work ethic.  He's determined, provides great leadership and he always seems to make plays."

Defensive Player of the Day: Darrell Songy, Jr., LB, New Orleans, La.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Songy: "DJ has been running with the ones the last week.  He has known what to do, but has taken his game to another level.  He has superior talent for this level, and when you add that in with knowing what to do and executing at a high level he just stands apart from people."

Play of the Day: On the final play of the last team period of the afternoon, Tyrone Williams leaped to complete a 14-yard reception over the defensive back in front of him to give the offense a first down.  Another candidate for consideration came during 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills when Gerald Everett caught a ball that was initially deflected by the defending linebacker, getting one foot down just inside the sideline to complete the play

Team period highlights: There were three team periods over the two-hour workout; the first saw the offense trying to convert on third-and-four, the second — lasting nearly 15 minutes — featured runs and play-action passes while the third set up the Jag offense to start drives with first-and-10 from its own 25- and 35-yard lines.

Miscellaneous Notes
-This was the Jaguars' first practice since their scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
-During the final team period, the USA defense forced four three-and-outs on six possessions, with three of those coming from the first-team unit.
-Jalen Thompson not only broke up a pair of passes on third down, the sophomore cornerback had a tackle for loss as well during the last period of the day.
-After completing 4-of-5 passes during 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills, Dallas Davis was 5-of-6 on three drives during the final team period.
-Xavier Johnson had four receptions out of the backfield during the last period of the day.
-The Jaguars ended practice attempting field goals from 32 yards out; Gavin Patterson connected on all four tries — two from both the right and left hash marks — while Keller Farni was 2-of-2.
-It was the first time this month the Jags worked out on the same day as attending classes with the start of the school's fall semester.

Head coach Joey Jones
-On the team's first practice since Saturday: "I thought they gave us all they had today, they came out and worked hard.  We have a few mental things we have to work on — we added a few little things here and there — so it wasn't as sharp as I wanted it."
-On practicing in the afternoon: "It was a little different, I'm used to getting up at 5:30 in the morning and getting out here with dew on the ground.  But I kind of like it, the reason we did it was to let our kids sleep in a little bit and not have to wake up at 5 or 5:30 every morning; I thought that made our kids tired at the end of the year.  I think I'm going to like it, it's a little warmer in the afternoons but we'll get used to it."
-On how the team handled practicing and classes on the same day for the first time this year: "I think most of them handled it, but some let it get to them.  I told them that in life you have to deal with change, it doesn't matter whether we practice in the morning or the afternoon, whether it's the first day of school, whether we have a delay in a ball game and have to go in the locker room; whatever it may be, we have to be able to handle those situations so we need to handle it better."
-On his evaluation of Saturday's scrimmage after watching film: "It was about what I said after the scrimmage.  I think pass protection-wise we had some issues, although it was a pretty good pass rush by the defense.  We found some younger guys, I thought Riley Cole played really well after looking at the film — he really grew up on Saturday — and the young receivers played well.  It wasn't much different than what I thought [initially], we are getting better."

Up next: South will practice on campus for two hours Wednesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
