Date: 8/18
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)
Offensive Player of the Day: none
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent: "I don't think we came out with an edge today. I don't think we came out and competed, so nobody really stood out to me."
Defensive Player of the Day: Nigel Lawrence, So., S, Smiths Station, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Lawrence: "We started off a little rocky today and had a couple of misfits early, but we challenged him and he responded. He's a young guy who is having to do a lot — we're asking a lot out of him — but he continues to respond and rise to the challenge. We were really proud of him today."
Play of the Day: Lawrence recorded the only takeaway of the afternoon for the Jag defense when he stepped in front of a receiver to intercept a pass deep in the offense's territory. During seven-on-seven skeleton passing drills, Maaseiah Francis ended the second of three offensive drives with a 30-yard, over-the-shoulder catch for a touchdown on a throw from Dallas Davis.
Team period highlights: The first team period of the afternoon was a nearly 15-minute segment of practice during which the offense focused on play-action passes as well as runs, with the second team period — lasting almost 20 minutes — including six offensive possessions starting with first-and-10 from its own 25-yard line.
Miscellaneous Notes
-During the final team period the South defense was credited with seven tackles for loss, with two of those coming from Neiko Robinson. That included stops behind the line from Roman Buchanan, Robinson and Sean Grayer with the offense facing third down.
-Gavin Patterson concluded the day by converting both of his field-goal attempts, from 42 and 47 yards out.
-James Bynes caught three balls in a four-play span on the second-team's initial possession of the last team period, picking up 35 yards while moving the chains on each occasion.
-Josh Magee also recorded three receptions during the same period, with his catches coming with the first-team unit.
-Evan Orth was 5-of-7 passing during two team-period drives — recording 47 yards — and he also completed all four-attempts to wrap up skeleton passing drills.
Head coach Joey Jones
-On Wednesday's practice: "I thought it was a good day from the standpoint of effort. We got a little sloppy on offense at the end, but I thought we started off practice really good offensively, they were executing really well; the last couple of drills weren't as good, but we took some steps. You don't want to finish practice like that though."
-On how the Jaguar defense performed in the workout: "Defensively we are still flying around, and we are finding more guys who are going to be able to get on the field for us. Tyree Turner continues to impress me, I think he is a real big force inside and has had a great camp. We're getting better over there and finding more guys, and that's the key in Division I football — you have to be able to withstand a 12-game schedule with injuries and have guys ready to come in and play. We're trying to build that depth right now."
-On how Saturday's scrimmage will be different from the team's first of the preseason: "I think the biggest thing is that this Saturday will be more situational, things we are going to make sure that we get in. We've hit a lot of them — we've hit every third down numerous times all through camp — but now we have to put it all together; now the punt team has to come out there after the offense goes three-and-out, and the punt return team needs to get out there after a defensive stop. It has to be more game-like this week, and the following week we'll do a complete scrimmage where we do every situation known to man. This one will be more game-like than it was last weekend, but with pretty much the same amount of plays."
Up next: The Jags will work out on campus Friday afternoon, with the session slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
