UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/6

Date: 8/6
Time: 8 a.m.-10 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Josh Magee, Sr., WR, Hoover, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Magee: "Josh Magee has really bought into what we're doing as an offense and a team.  He's extremely talented.  He comes out here with a purpose and works extremely hard.  He's starting to make a lot of big plays, his hard work is paying off."

Defensive Player of the Day: Bull Barge, So., LB, Moultrie, Ga.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Barge: "Bull Barge did some really good things.  He's a young kid who is stepping up as a leader for our defense.  It's not that he did everything perfect today, but when a mistake was made or a guy was dragging, he's the one to try to bring guys up.  We need that leadership whether it be a young guy or an old guy; whoever it is that steps up, those are the guys we'll go into battle with."

Play of the Day: Carlos Robinson II scored on a 20-yard touchdown run during red zone drills that saw the junior split through two defenders attempting to stop him at the two-yard line.  On the next snap, Dallas Davis threw a pass just over the hand of the defender to find Josh Magee in the corner of the end zone for a 12-yard score.

Team period highlights: The first three offensive units ran red zone plays — first from the 20-yard line, then from the 12-yard line — during the first 15-minute team period.  A second team period followed, this one lasting just over five minutes, that saw the first- and second-team units attempt to convert on third-and-long situations.

Miscellaneous Notes
-This marked the first time during preseason camp that the Jaguars practiced in full pads.
-The first-team defense stopped the initial red zone possession of the morning as Roman Buchanan had a tackle for loss on first down and Sean Grayer recorded a sack two plays later, but the offense responded with four straight touchdowns.  In addition to Robinson's and Magee's plays, Deonta Moore scored on a five-yard run and Milton Revell crossed the goal line from 12 yards out.
-On third-and-long, the first-team defensive unit bounced back by stopping the offense short of the line to make on three of four plays, with Randy Allen posting a sack and Diantae Thomas tackling Sam Harris shy of the marker after a completion from Davis.
-Dami Ayoola had a run up the middle while Evan Orth found Jordan McCray for a long gain down the sideline as the second-team offense was 2-of-4 on conversions.
-The special teams focus for the day was on both kickoff and punt returns.

Head coach Joey Jones
-On his impressions of the final practice of the week: "Here we are on our fifth day and we lifted weights twice this week, so they were a little tired coming out.  But I thought we responded well toward the end of practice.  The effort is there, we are getting better mentally, but we have to continue to work."
-On the defense's performance the opening week of camp: "Defensively we played really well on third-down series throughout the course of the week including today.  The red zone wasn't quite as good.  The defense is at a little bit of a disadvantage down there, but they have to bow up and make the other side kick field goals."
-On the success of the offense in the red zone: "Here's the key right now — compared to last year, or even last spring, offensively we are running the football better.  If we can run the football, it's going to open up a lot of things in the throw game.  The offensive line is doing a heck of a job, we're much improved there.  And it's going to make our defense better going against a very good offensive line every day."
-On the plan to prepare for the second week of the preseason: "We'll meet as a staff tomorrow, reshuffle the deck on the depth chart and move to the next week, and after next Saturday we'll reshuffle again.  These guys have to earn what they get, if you're out here working your tail off it will show up on film."

Up next: After their first day off of preseason practice, the Jags will be back on the field for an 8 a.m. workout on Monday
