Date: 8/9
Time: 8 a.m.-10 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads
Offensive Player of the Day: James Bynes, Sr., TE, Miami, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Bynes: "He didn't have a great day yesterday and we challenged him. Today, he came out and gave great effort and played the way we expect him to play every day. The key for us as a team — as an offense, as an individual, as a coaching staff — is to be consistent daily. Let's see if we can build upon that."
Defensive Player of the Day: Roman Buchanan, Sr., LB, Enterprise, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Buchanan: "We asked Roman to make a sacrifice and change positions from something that he had been doing for the last three years here. He gave no complaints about it. During the spring time, he lined up and executed and did a really good job. Now you are starting to see the production come out because he understands the position, and he's able to take all of those reps that he played at safety and transition those to experience at the linebacker position."
Play of the Day: With the offense facing third-and-goal from the seven-yard line, Buchanan dropped back into coverage and made a leaping interception while falling backward into the end zone to end the threat.
Team period highlights: There were three team periods throughout the two-hour workout; the first lasted 15 minutes with the offense focusing on run and play-action plays during the first half of drills, while the day ended with periods featuring red zone and third-and-short situations.
Miscellaneous Notes
-With the exception of Buchanan's interception, the offense scored on its other three possessions starting at or inside the defense's 20-yard line — Xavier Johnson crossed the goal line from 10 yards out while Cole Garvin connected with Jordan McCray for a 20-yard touchdown pass, and Gavin Patterson tacked on a 42-yard field goal.
-Patterson converted again from 42 yards out between the red zone and third-down periods.
-The first-team offense moved the chains three of four times on third-and-one or -two, with Dami Ayoola converting twice with runs up the middle. The second-team defense got multiple stops after Rocel McWilliams recorded a tackle in the backfield and an incompletion.
-In the red zone, Dallas Davis completed all three pass attempts including hitting Kevin Kutchera for 10 yards prior to Johnson's score and finding Gerald Everett for six yards on the first-team unit's second series.
-Davis was 5-of-8 during 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills, with Evan Orth connecting on 4-of-7 attempts and Garvin finishing 2-of-4 passing; the latter completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Deshawn Applewhite.
-In addition to recording three coverage sacks during the skeleton passing period, Quinton Dent, Ryan Robinson and Sterrling Fisher broke up passes.
Head coach Joey Jones
-On the offensive performance today: "The biggest improvement that I've seen from our offense is on our line. Guys are really coming off the ball. That's going to make our defense better. During the offseason, one of our main focuses was to play well on the interior. The skill players can make plays if those guys can block for them."
-On the play of the defensive secondary at this point: "We're very talented back there. Two of our starters aren't in there right now with Kalen [Jackson] and Jeremy [Reaves] injured, but they will be back out [at practice] tomorrow. The back-up guys have come in and done well. I'm real pleased with our secondary; our corners and safeties are both playing well, our linebackers are playing well. I'm real excited about our pass coverage at this point."
-On his evaluation of the physicality of the team right now: "One thing is I'm having to hold them back. They like to hit and they like the contact — when you have that [on your team], it's a good thing. We've got to make sure that we take care of our guys and we're doing that. We're practicing much better right now. Early during the first two or three pad practices there were too many people on the ground, too many missed tackles and things I don't like to see, but right now we're learning to practice at a fast tempo and keep it off the ground."
