Ed Rains who appeared in No. 15 as a Jaguar from 1978-81, had his number retired by the South Alabama Athletic Department in a ceremony midway through the 1982-83 season. Rains concluded his career as South Alabama’s all-time leading scorer (1,801 points) and second-leading rebounder (720). A second-round draft choice of the San Antonio Spurs, Rains was the first Jaguar to appear in an NBA game. He earned all-America honors four times in his career, twice by the Basketball Weekly (1979, 1981) and the Sporting News (1979, 1981). The Sun Belt named him Junior of the Year in 1980, and the Senior of the Year and Player of the Year in 1981, as well as to the All-Time Men's Basketball Team, during the league's 30th anniversary. Rains was the first player in school history to be voted to three all-Sun Belt teams (1979-81), and he still holds the school's record for steals in a game (9).
