General information
Mission/Philosophy
Here at the University of South Alabama we are committed to developing not only the athlete, but also the character and value of the person. Not only do we emphasize overall skill & athletic ability, we also believe in, and support strong academics, school pride, community service, and the unity within the team. The primary mission to the student is to support and not to compromise the student's academic career.
Cheerleading Organizational Structure
The University of South Alabama cheerleading program has opportunities for both a coed & all girl members. We cheer for home football, Volleyball, and basketball games, with select members cheering for designated away football games & conference championship basketball games. Generally, at least 26 to 36 members are chosen at spring tryouts. Once team members are selected at tryouts, team placement is done to fill our competition teams. Additional team members may be added in the fall or spring semester if the coaching staff deemed necessary.
Mascot Organizational Structure
The University of South Alabama mascot team consists of 4-8 "Friends" of SouthPaw & Miss Pawla who aid in all events and functions SouthPaw and Miss Pawla attend. All members of the mascot team attend all home football, men's and women's basketball, conference volleyball, soccer, softball and baseball games. Selected mascot members will travel for designated away games, as well as UCA Mascot Camp & UCA or NCA Mascot National Competition.
Competition
South Alabama currently competes in the Small Coed Division 1, and Large Coed or All-Girl Game Day D1A competition at the UCA College National Championship in Orlando, FL, or at NCA College National Championship in Daytona, FL. All members are eligible to compete at the UCA or NCA National Championships, depending on academic standing, athletic ability, and proven performance. Only 16-22 members, including alternates, will be chosen to compete in the small coed division, while up to 30 team members may be chosen for the game day division. Although only select members are chosen to compete, all members may be required to attend nationals practice and will accompany the competition team to the national championship.
SouthPaw and/or Miss Pawla currently compete in the D1A Division at UCA mascot Nationals and NCA mascot Nationals should either one qualify. All mascot members are required to aid in the preparation for mascot nationals and will accompany SouthPaw & Miss Pawla to Florida for competition.
*All team members are responsible for participating in fundraising to cover the expense of attending nationals regardless of member status on competition team.

The coaching staff will determine the amount of scholarship each member will receive based on the following: seniority on team, academic standing, attitude, fundraising efforts, and athletic ability.
