Coaches Connection

The "Coaches Connection" is a mentorship program geared to develop and enhance leadership skills for student-athletes. The program provides student-athletes in majors of Business and Engineering the opportunity to gain valuable professional work experience through internship opportunities and networking with local businesses that could potentially lead to fulltime employment upon graduation.

To select the individuals for this mentorship program:
1. We will provide this opportunity to coaches, selected staff and S.A.A.C for nominations and/or recommendations through email and other sources (i.e., social media);
2. Interested student-athletes will complete a brief application;
3. Members of the Athletic Senior Administrative team will review the applicants and make the selections.

Purpose
The University of South Alabama's Athletics Academic Services Office is committed to providing a comprehensive program that emphasizes the development of academic, personal, and professional excellence for our student-athlete population.  We strive to create an environment that fosters the highest standards of integrity, academic support and performance while providing the resources necessary for our student-athletes to achieve their academic potential and prepare them for life after college athletics.

Facilities/Resources
The Athletics Academic Services Office is housed in Department's state-of-the-art Academic Center.  This 4,500 square-foot facility includes staff offices, private tutor rooms, study tables and carrels, and a computer lab with 28 computers.  For more information, visit the Academic Center facility page.

Academic support programming available to student-athletes includes, but is not limited to:
• Advisement — the Athletics Academic Services staff assists student-athletes with planning their class schedules and deciding on a degree program that will suit their needs.  Equipped with an in-depth knowledge of both the University's various academic programs and the NCAA's requirements for maintaining academic eligibility, the athletic counselors are able to provide our student-athletes with a unique combination of support that enables their academic growth and ensures their progress toward graduation.
• Tutorial Assistance — the Athletics Academic Services Office employs approximately 25 tutors a year from a wide variety of academic disciplines.  Our tutors are committed to providing a proactive, individualized approach to assist student-athletes with subject comprehension and study skills.
• Supervised Study Hall — the Athletics Academic Services Office conducts a monitored study program designed to provide student-athletes with organized study and tutoring time in an environment conducive to successful learning.  Study Hall is required for all freshmen, first-year transfers, student-athletes with a cumulative GPA below a 2.50, and any student-athlete who the coaching staff and/or the sport-specific athletic counselor believe would benefit from the experience.
• Progress Reporting — the Athletics Academic Services staff utilizes contemporary web-based technology to proactively gather in-term progress report information from University faculty members.  This allows our staff to monitor a student-athlete's academic profile throughout the semester and stay abreast of situations where a student-athlete may be struggling and/or underperforming.
